TEACHING SPEAKING BASED ON PROCEDURE TEXT USING COUNSELING-LEARNING APPROACH FOR BEGINNERS

Abstract

It is obvious that in Indonesia, the position of English is as a foreign language not as a second one and most of the students have been at least bilingual- they speak with their mother tongue and Indonesian lan¬guage, the environments where they live and where mey study are not conducive, those two environments are very bad exposure, at home there is no one who speaks English, at school no friends and no teachers communi¬cate in English, on the other words, they do not have English vocabulary, English grammar, and other English elements - if they have, the number is very limited Based on the above statement, it is really impossible to apply Communicative Approach (CA) saying that a language is a mean of commu¬nication is not appropriate to be used to teach English for Indonesian, especially for beginner learners, why ?, because CA does not put structure and vocabulary, in the central attention, but rather it puts the structure and vocabulary under the main role of a language, that is communication, and what is worst in CA, the teacher uses the target language as a medium of instruction(freeman 1985:128) that make the atmosphere of teaching and learning process become not conducive, the student know nothing. To meet the consideration, I propose that Counseling-Learning Approach could be used in the teaching English for foreign language learners, because in this approach, the teacher become a language counselor who is a skillful helper of the students in attempting to internalize another language, and of course the students first and second language are recommended to be used as a medium of instruction. In this paper the writer is intending to share experiences with all readers on the principle of teaching Based on Procedure Text Using Counseling-Learning Approach for Beginners.
